Diabetes and Cycling

Get out and ride, this report came out last week.
A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on data from 2007, said the number represents an increase of about 3 million over two years. The CDC estimates another 57 million people have blood sugar abnormalities called pre-diabetes, which puts people at increased risk for the disease.

The percentage of people unaware that they have diabetes fell from 30 percent to 25 percent, according to the study.

So dust off your cycling gloves, click into your pedals and let all your worries leave you and get healthier.

Tour De Cure 2008 Rock n' Ride - Team Wipeout

I decided last week that I would have been nuts to try and do the 100k ride. I have not been out on my road bike this year so my next option was doing the 50K moderate ride. .Let me tell you that was a great decision. It still was a challenging ride but I had a smile on my face the whole time. It was avery hot day temps in the low 90's with a strong wind that slowed us down. I rode with one of my niece's. She had Kim's road bike. She said it was very light and she was glad she was not doing on her mountain bike. She was also glad that I didn't have my road bike either..  It was a great day two of my sisters volunteered, the other one rode, my 2 neices rode, my wife and daughter rode. I am not exactly sure how much we raised this year but it should be over $1300.00 dollars from Team Wipeout.

I want to thank the rest of Team Wipeout for volunteering/riding with me.

Rock 'n Ride Tour De Cure Newsletter.

This is from the newsletter that I received today. It is not too late to sponsor me.

Team Wipeout

Working to Wipeout Diabetes

Randy Zabarsky has been participating in Tour de Cure since 2004. His dedication to the ride and to the cause of diabetes have resulted in his fund-raising of over $3,000 through the years, the creation of Team Wipeout in 2007 and his work on the Tour de Cure Volunteer Committee.

Randy started with Tour de Cure after seeing a display at a Century Cycles store. His love for cycling and family members with diabetes got him to do the ride in 2004. He comes back year after year because "It is a great cause and I love seeing the passion that people have for raising money to find a cure for diabetes."

Randy's most important advice about fund-raising for Tour is to ask everyone you know. "People at work, family members, people from organizations you belong to. Send an email and follow-up with a phone call. It is easy to ignore an email, it is a lot harder to say no on the phone or in person." He also suggests you put in the miles to make sure your ride is enjoyable. Training for the 100k is very important!

Randy's first year as a team captain was in 2007 and with 6 team members was our 8th highest fund-raising team, raising $2,255. His advice for team captains is, "Keep in touch with your team, send out emails and call them to keep them focused on raising funds and getting the miles in to be prepared for the ride."

Childhood obesity and the increase of Type 2 diabetes in our youth and major reasons Tour is so important to Randy. "I see the children at my daughter's school and so many of them are increasing their risk for diabetes by being overweight. Not only do we need to find a cure but until then we need to get awareness of the dangers of being a overweight and not being active. The problem is that people don't know they are a diabetic unless they get checked."

Finally, Randy's parting words about Tour de Cure are, "The Rock n' Ride Tour De Cure is a great event. It would not be possible with out the help of all the volunteers. People volunteer their time for everything from designing the route, putting up the route markers, marketing, registration to working the rest stops just to name a few. These volunteers give up their time and do their best to make this event enjoyable to the cyclists. If someone in your family does not ride see if they can volunteer. If someone says they don't have money to support your ride see if they will support you by volunteering their time on the day of event."

Randy will be at the helm of Team Wipeout once again in 2008 and is gearing up for a great Tour and cycling season! Randy is also on the Recruitment Committee. Many of you may have received a phone call or an email from him.

Tour De Cure 2008

It is that time again. The Tour De Cure is coming and I am once again asking for people to sponsor me.. I am going to do the 100K Challenge ride again.  Last year I ended up walking 2 of the hills and riding up all the others... I am not going to walk any this year!!!    So I am committed to getting in more miles/spin classes in then I did last year.  Keep up to date with my progress at http://web.mac.com/razab9394/Randy/My_Active_World/My_Active_World.html?27ff2a58 .

Now to your part, Diabetes is a growing epidemic in the United States. I see the children at my daughters elementary school and so many of them are  at  increased  risk for diabetes by being overweight. Not only do we need to find a cure but until then we need to get awareness of the dangers of being a overweight and not being active. I am sure you have heard of Juvenile Diabetes, this is not what I am talking about, I am talking about "Adult Onset Diabetes" (Type2) in children.  Parents don't think that they will become a Diabetic  because of their unhealthy living let alone their elementary school child.

I know that everyone is concerned  with the economy at this time .   Did you stop by Starbuck's today? Planning on going out to eat tonight, this weekend? I am not asking for your paycheck, mortgage payment or even your car payment.   All I am asking is for you not to go out one night and donate that money to fight diabetes .  Here is the link to do just that http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TDC270418030?pg=personal&fr_id=5027&fr_id=5027&px=1739696 . My Daughter Morgan (9 Years old) is also riding the TDC ,  here is her link http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TDC270418030?pg=personal&fr_id=5027&fr_id=5027&px=2778353

If you absolutely cannot donate money, how about time?  How about being a Volunteer to help out at your local Tour De Cure ride or dust off your bicycle and join a team ?
